Local Myositis Group Creates Awareness and Bonds at Recent Event

Posted
SARASOTA – On May 7, an awareness event for myositis was held in Sarasota that brought together people with the disease as well as friends wanting to learn more about the complex condition. Over 60 people attended the event.

Rose Ryan, one of the attendees at the event, is a member of the Myositis Association's Kid Support Group. Having been diagnosed with the condition while in her early twenties, Rose says "I was very lucky to have been diagnosed as early as I did." After its onset in the human body, myositis can often take around three and a half years following visits to several different medical professionals before a proper diagnosis is given.

Support from the annual event and getting to know its attendees has been a great experience, says Rose. "We're an upbeat group; it's not that we dwell on 'poor me.' Instead, we encourage each other to do the things that we can still do despite having myositis."

The event was promoted by the Myositis Assocation's website, which also gives information about other such events happening around the country. More information about the organization and local groups can be found here.
