Manatee County Farm Week Kicks off Next Monday

MANATEE COUNTY – The 2011 Manatee County Farm Week will bring its annual celebration of agriculture back to the local area with events throughout the county next week. There will be a unique opportunity to go on a local farm tour Monday, visiting Manatee County Fairgrounds, Jones Potato Farm, Schroeder Manatee Ranch, and C & D Fruit and Vegetable Company.

The annual Kiwanis Farm Week Luncheon takes place on Tuesday to honor the ”Outstanding Agriculturist“ and Faye Blackstone will be inducted into the Manatee County Agriculture Hall of Fame on Thursday at a luncheon open to the public. The celebration concludes with several events on Saturday including a rodeo, beef prospect show and Pongo's birthday in the park.

The full schedule and details of each event are listed below:

November 14 - Manatee River Soil Speech Contest. Open to all middle and high school age youth...For more information contact Gail Somodi at (941) 907-0011.


November 14 - Agricultural Farm Tour ...Open to the public...Call Cindy for reservations at 722-4524. Visiting Manatee County Fairgrounds, Jones Potato Farm, Schroeder Manatee Ranch (SMR) (Cattle, Citrus, Sod), Lunch at SMR, C & D Fruit and Vegetable Company. $40 per person includes transportation, snack, and lunch.


November 15 - Kiwanis Luncheon, Outstanding Agriculturist Honored (invitation only). Contact Betty Glassburn at 776-1296.  The Outstanding Agriculturist is a current member of the agriculture community who has provided outstanding service to a commodity during their lifetime.


November 16 - Leadership Manatee Tour (invitation only). Must be enrolled in current Leadership Manatee Class.


November 17- Hall of Fame Luncheon, Inductee Faye Blackstone will be inducted into the Manatee County Agriculture Hall of Fame. Luncheon is open to the public tickets are $12 per person.  For reservations call Sharon at 722-4524 or Ann at 722-8940.  Manatee County Farm City Week Essay winners also honored.


November 18 - AgVenture at Mosaic Arena.1,200 third graders learning about agriculture through hands-on experience. Invite only. Contact Diana Smith 722-4524.


November 19 - Beef Prospect Show. Open to all Manatee County 4-H and FFA members. Educational programs in the morning with showmanship starting at 1:30. Pre-registration. Contact Christa Kirby or Jennifer Glassburn at 722-4524. Public welcome to come watch the free show starting at 1:30 p.m. at Mosaic Arena.


November 19 - Cortez Folk Arts Festival. Contact Ted Adams at 708-6120 for more information.


November 19 - Faye Blackstone Memorial Junior Ranch Rodeo. 7:00 PM.  Open to everyone. Cost $5 per person held at Mosaic Arena.  For more information contact Betty Glassburn 776-1296.


November 19 - Pongo’s Birthday in the Park. 10:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m. Palmetto Historical Park. Call Diane Ingram at 721-2034.
