Bradenton, FL (December 13, 2011) – Manatee County’s Natural Resources Department requests volunteer help during a special canoe and kayak paddle trip around Robinson Preserve. ”Take a break from the hectic holidays with a relaxing paddle through Robinson Preserve with our fabulous volunteer tour guide Wayne,“ invites NRD naturalist Melissa Cain Nell. ”Along the way, we will help clean up the waterways of Robinson Preserve by paddling in and collecting trash to take out.“ Each day, the waters of Tampa Bay, Palma Sola Bay, and Perico Bayou converge upon Robinson Preserve and bring with them whatever trash has been blown, or thrown, into the waters.
The preserve is carefully cleaned by both Rangers and volunteers, but it’s a daily job that always needs to be done. By using kayaks to move through the preserve, we are able to reach areas that otherwise go uncleaned, helping out to keep the environment safe and healthy for the property’s resident wildlife species. The volunteers’ work will help to save wildlife that might get entangled in fishing line or consume discarded trash. Litter decreases water quality, blocks habitat, can endanger wildlife, and reduces aesthetic appeal. By working to remove the trash, volunteers can learn more about the importance of litter prevention while helping the environment and having a beautiful paddle.

This paddle isn’t just a trash safari, though! There will be plenty of opportunities to scope out the wildlife that hide along the water’s edge including many of the unique bird species that are currently visiting the preserve during their winter migration.
