Manatee County School Board Meeting Results December 13, 2010

BRADENTON -- Several items were on the agenda on Monday night. The board approved a controversial order to abolish the Policy 5.7 which buses minority children to Braden River, McNeal and Tara Elementary Schools to promote school diversity. Adam Caldwell and Ronnie Perrault of Haile Middle School wrote a play that has gained state-wide acclaim. Their work, Pandora’s Punishment was selected by the The Florida Council of English Teachers as the best in the state, and will be published in FCTE magazine, Gulfstream 2010.

  • The Florida Council of English Teachers (FCTE) has selected Pandora’s Punishment, a play written by two Haile Middle School sixth grade students, Adam Caldwell and Ronnie Perrault, as the best in the State of Florida in the annual FCTE writing contest.
  • Adam and Ronnie’s play will be published in the FCTE magazine, Gulfstream 2010.

  • The topic of the night for public comment was change and improvement. Tom Garland welcomed the new board members and encouraged them to look into  a planning committee that would promote involvement from members of the community.
  • Dave "Watchdog" Minor encouraged transparency especially in regards to construction bids."We need to tell the people who’s getting paid and what they’re doing with the money,“ he said.

  • Consistent with the Board’s request, Darcy Hopko, Assistant Superintendent of District Support Services, will report on the status of EdVantage, the District’s Strategic Plan.

PUBLIC HEARING
13. Public Hearing for Consideration of Adopting an Amendment to Policy 5.7, Student Assignment due to Realignment for Braden River, McNeal and Tara Elementary Schools - p.21 (Unanimoulsy Approved)
  • The attendance zones for Braden River, Tara, and McNeal Elementary schools currently have special areas non contiguous with the area that contains the school site.  This request is to eliminate those areas utilizing Policy 5.7 Realignment.  This would allow families easier access to schools in their neighborhoods and foster participation in school activities for both students and parents.  One of the district’s strategic objectives is that family is the first and most powerful influence on a person’s life.  This process would begin immediately and be implemented beginning with the 2011/12 school year.

  • Brook Rainville has been employed by the Manatee County School Board. During the 2009-2010 school year she was absent for 95 out of the 190 days she was expected to work.
  • The Administrative Law Judge sided with the Superintendent that the evidence of Rainville’s absences in the 2009-2010 school year alone, even if authorized, was excessive and violated School Board policy. The ALJ recommended that the Board enter a Final Order terminating Brook Rainville’s employment.
