Manatee County School Board Regular Meeting Results Sept. 26, 2011

BRADENTON – The School Board recognized this year’s history fair winners. Several pubic comments addressed the redistricting boundaries; members of the School Board plan to have an upcoming workshop on the issues. Members set October 24, 2011 as the public hearing to consider a proposed amendment to offer the school breakfast program at no charge to any student attending schools where over 80 percent of their students are eligible for free or reduced price meals.  Several students and teachers were recognized for their outstanding acheivements.

STUDENT CELEBRATION 

7. Florida State History Fair Winners - p.14

  • Ms. Elizabeth Smith, K-12 Social Studies Curriculum Specialist, introduced and present certificates to four Manatee District middle school students for their awards at the Florida State History Fair.  Thirty-one public school students participated at the history fair from May 1, 2011 through May 3, 2011 at the Tallahassee Community College.
  • Mackenzie Yaryura, a tenth grader from Southeast High School, earned first place in the Performance-Senior Individual category for her project: "Rosa Luxemburg: Passion and Sacrifice."
  • Kensley Knoll, a sixth grader from Buffalo Creek Middle School, earned third place in the Performance-Junior category for her project: "Surrendering Their Spirit: Effect of the Forced Cultural Assimilation on the American Indians."
  • Jordan Sanders and Ashley Gillam, tenth graders from Braden River High School, earned third place in the Documentary Senior Group category for their project: "Separate But Equal? How the Jim Crow Law Affected African-American Musicians in Florida."
  • Miss Yaryura and Miss Knoll participated at the National History Day in Washington, DC on June 16, 2011.

RECOGNITIONS 

10. Bayshore High School Academies - p.17

  • Three Bayshore High School teacher teams assisted by their Academic Advisor, Priscilla Goodwin, and Career Advisor, Laura Roberts, spent the past year planning and documenting their efforts to provide three major career pathways for their students.  Their efforts enabled them to prepare the materials required to meet the Career Academy National Standards of Practice.
  • Each of these three teams participated in an academy review by the National Career Academy Coalition representatives during the month of May 2011. During the review process they demonstrated that they were able to meet the ten standards by the required levels of accomplishment.
  • This program meets several EdVantage strategic objectives including: Redesign curriculum to support core values and strategic objectives.
  • Angie Grasberger, Small Learning Communities Project Manager, introduced each Academy Lead Teacher, Career and Academic Advisor, and Principal.

12.  Five Star Cafeteria Status 2010-2011 - p.19

  •  Sandra Ford, Food Service Director, recognized two school cafeteria managers and their cafeteria workers on their efforts of achieving a Five Star cafeteria status for 2010-11 school year.  They are Gullett Elementary School and Willis Elementary School.

 

13. The Florida Council for the Social Studies Teacher of the Year Award - p.20

  •  Ms. Elizabeth Smith, K-12 Social Studies Curriculum Specialist, will introduce then present a certificate to Mr. Jim Haskins for being this year's Social Studies Teacher of the Year.  Mr. Haskins currently teaches 6th grade World History at Braden River Middle School.
  • Mr. Haskins has three traits that make him an exemplary teacher:
  1. His commitment to remember his students and their backgrounds.  Mr. Haskin earns the trust and admiration of his students.  His students remember him as funny, loving, caring, and smart, and he never forgets the names of his students.
  2. His diverse background.  Mr. Haskin's family wanted him to become a minister, but instead he heard the 'calling' of teaching.
  3. He is a life-long learner.  Mr. Haskins continually participates in professional development that increases the knowledge and experience of not only himself, but also his students.
  • Congratulations to Mr. Haskins for providing excellent teaching to our students.

 

 

14. Promoting Regional Interest in Science and Mathematics (PRISM) Outstanding Mathematics and Science Student and Teacher Recognition - p.22

  • The School District of Manatee County is partnering with Promoting Regional Interest in Science and Mathematics (PRISM) to set and achieve a global standard of excellence in K-12 mathematics and science education in support of economic development throughout the Florida High Tech Corridor.  PRISM partners believe science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) education success will be driven best by public-private partnerships between business and industry and our school system.  To this end, PRISM links the business community to schools through teacher and student recognition, reward programs, and incentive grants to increase student participation in mathematics and science competitions, idea exchanges, and industry outreach. 
  • Through PRISM, one outstanding mathematics and science teacher for elementary and secondary levels and one outstanding middle school mathematics and science student have been selected to represent Manatee School District.  In addition to the School Board recognition, students will receive a $250 savings bond and teachers will be recognized at a PRISM Awards Ceremony on September 22, 2011 at the Orlando Science Center. Each teacher will receive a $500 grant with certificates and teaching resources.
