WWII HISTORY WILL COME ALIVE AT BAYSHORE HIGH WHEN HISTORY GROUP VISITS
Bayshore High students will get to see history come alive when Bayshore’s School of Business, Technology and Global Studies hosts ”The Fighting Falcons“ a World War II Living History Group on Friday, May 7, 2010, beginning at 8:45 a.m. The history group will honor the 16 million men and women who served in the U.S. Military during World War II and will commemorate VE-Day, which was May 8, 1945. HARLLEE MIDDLE SCHOOL’S ÔCULTURAL CELEBRATION’ FEATURES ART, DANCE AND FOOD

Art exhibitions, a Haitian Dance Group, other dances from around the world, a Food Banquet, school tours and information about Boys and Girls Club registrations and summer camp registrations will all be a part of the ”Cultural Celebration at Harllee Middle School“ on Wednesday, May 5, 2010 beginning at 4 p.m. in the school’s cafeteria. The purpose of the celebration is for people of all different ethnic and racial backgrounds to gather together and share their differences. DAUGHTREY ELEMENTARY COMMUNITY PLANS BEAUTIFICATION DAY FOR MAY 1

Daughtrey Elementary Beautification Day will take place on Saturday, May 1, 2010 from 9 a.m. to noon. Students, parents, staff and the entire Daughtrey community are invited to beautify the school’s campus with landscaping materials donated through a generous grant provided by the Serenoa Chapter of the Florida Native Plant Society and the Home Depot on University Avenue. LOTS OF DOGS ABOUT TO HAVE THEIR DAY THANKS TO BAYSHORE ELEMENTARY STUDENTS

Members of the Bob DeLaney Leadership Academy at Bayshore Elementary have collected more than 500 items during a Dog Supply Drive to benefit Canine Castaways, Inc. The Dog Supply Drive was the academy’s spring community service project and students handled all of the details from delivering flyers to classrooms to motivating students to bring items to counting the items donated. On Friday, April 30, 2010 at 2:15 p.m., representatives from Canine Castaways, Inc. will visit the school to pick up the supplies collected. COQUINA BEACH GETS A CLEAN-UP THANKS TO GROUP FROM JOHNSON MIDDLE SCHOOL

As part of its ”Saturday Science“ program, students, teachers and parents from Johnson Middle School of International Studies spent a recent Saturday picking up trash at Coquina Beach during the annual ”Keep Manatee Beautiful Coastal Cleanup.“ The group picked up more than 700 cigarette butts, bags of paper and plastic and many aluminum cans and bottles. Johnson Middle is an International Baccalaureate school and this trip was sponsored by the Southwest Florida Water Management District’s mini-grant program. LAKEWOOD RANCH HIGH LATIN CLUB WINS ACCOLADES AT STATE LATIN FORUM

Latin Club students at Lakewood Ranch High participated in the State Latin Forum in Kissimmee this month and placed third in ”Ludi“ a category comprised of club activities and games. The Club also placed eighth in the ”Advanced QuizBowl“ and 16th in ”Overall Creative Academics.“ Lakewood Ranch students who finished first, second or third in individual competitions included Erica Earl, Katie Hancock, Scott Hinton, Rachel Olivieri and Katherine Somodi. DISTRICT’S ELEMENTARY SCHOOLS ART AND MUSIC FESTIVAL SET FOR TUESDAY, MAY 11

Talented elementary school students across Manatee County are preparing diligently to participate in one of the premier events of the school year as they come together for the ”Manatee County Elementary Schools Art and Music Festival,“ to be held on Tuesday, May 11, 2010, beginning at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Braden River High. This traditional springtime event features artwork, musical ensembles, drum line, recorders, guitars, chimes, strings and an All-County Choir with over 130 specially-selected students from 30 elementary schools.
