BRADENTON – At Thursday's Manatee Planning Commission meeting, members voted to recommend approval for some shuffling of density and retail use in a DRI project. In other business, members voted in favor of allowing a helistop on a golf course in east county.

(Bower said the project wasn't compatible with the lifestyle of the neighborhood, as evidenced by all of the residents that came to the meeting to contest the project).

Commissioners struggled for hours to determine how a "helistop" was different from a heliport and/or helipad. One of the opposing residents said, "Do a real test, come on out, I'll put you on a horse and we'll watch the helicopter land. I won't get on one, but I'll watch you." The applicant wants to place a helistop on a golf course that is surrounded on two sides with four equestrian ranch-style developments. Commissioners voted to allow the construction of a helistop – Recommenation for Approval, 4-2, Bower and Rhodes dissenting. (full story)
