PUBLIC COMMENTS (6:30 p.m.)
12. Public Comments
Almost 60 public comment cards were filled out for the meeting. Many of the commenters came to address concerns about school recess, bus driver pay and benefits, and private security at elementary schools. On recess, several commenters - some of whom were parents of students at Virgil Mills Elementary - said that the changes to recess structure for students this school year decreases childrens' burning of energy and relief of stress on school days where they used to have 30 minures of teacher-supervised recess) and affect their ability to sit down in class and would overall be detrimental to the learning process in schools.Several bus drivers for the school district also came to the dais to protest their pay and absence of benefits.Still others came to argue against the district's newly implemented policy of having private security officers, or Community Security Officers, on elementary school campuses, with some saying the policy would not be effective at increasing safety and security of students and that the $1 million per year that the district is paying Sarasota Security Patrol for the CSOs would be better spent elsewhere.
