BRADENTON -- The Marauders (4-1) scored twice in the eighth and twice in the ninth to snag a 4-3 win over the Palm Beach Cardinals (3-2) on Tuesday night at McKechnie Field. Bradenton’s winning streak is now four while Palm Beach’s winning streak was snapped at three.
Trailing 3-2 with two outs in the ninth, Bradenton designated hitter Jordan Steranka drilled the first pitch he saw from Thomas Lee (L, 0-1) onto the boardwalk in right field to tie the score 3-3. The home run was Steranka’s second of the year. Walker Gourley followed with a two-out single to right. Raul Fortunato then delivered a base hit into right that was misplayed by Cardinals outfielder Stalin Rodriguez, allowing Gourley to circle the bases and score without a throw.
Bradenton trimmed a 3-0 lead to 3-2 in the eighth inning. Gourley walked on four pitches against Robert Stock. Fortunato smacked a hard single off of first baseman David Washington’s leg to put men at the corners. Jeff Roy grounded out to bring in Gourley. After a wild pitch advanced Fortunato to third, Jin-De Jhang brought home the run with a grounder to short. Stock walked Adam Frazier, but Lee came on to strike out Josh Bell to end the inning.
Jhondaniel Medina (W, 1-0) struck out the side in the ninth to earn the win for Bradenton. Jason Creasy and Ryan Hafner each pitched four innings for the Marauders. Palm Beach starter Kyle Helisek fired six innings of one-hit ball to hold Bradenton in check into the late innings.
Game two of the series is Wednesday night at 6:30 p.m. Gates open at 5:30. Former Marauder and 2013 National League All Star Jeff Locke is expected to make a rehab start for Bradenton.
