BRADENTON--The Pittsburgh Pirates organization has promoted Mike Steele to be the Bradenton Marauders new pitching coach for the 2011 season. Steele comes up from the State College Spikes of the New York-Penn League. He joins new Marauders Manager Carlos Garcia’s staff along with new hitting coach Ryan Long.

Under Mike Steele, the Spikes pitching staff finished fifth in the NYPL with a 3.37 ERA and a league low 198 walks for the season. Prior to joining the Pirates organization four years ago, Steele was the director of baseball for Bo Jackson’s Elite Sports in Chicago. Before that he was the pitching coach for two seasons at Michigan State University.
Steele was drafted by the Detroit Tigers out of Central Michigan University in 2000 and pitched in both the Tigers and Seattle Mariners organizations. He has a degree in sports management from CMU.
The Marauders begin its second season in Bradenton’s McKechnie Field in April 2011.
