WASHINGTON — Calling it "a wake-up call we should not ignore," Congressman Vern Buchanan recently spoke about Greece's financial crisis and how he views the U.S. as having a possibly similar future.
The Congressional Budget Office recently estimated that U.S. debt could reach the same heights as Greece—175 percent of its GDP—within 25 years if spending continues at the present rate. “What is happening in Greece today could very well become the fate of America if we do not take serious steps to control spending,” Buchanan said.
The congressman also stated that the Greek crisis is “a stark reminder that our national debt is a ticking time bomb threatening every American, young and old.”
The U.S. national debt has doubled from $9 trillion in 2007 to $18 trillion today.
A senior member of the House Ways & Means Committee, Buchanan is a supporter of creating a constitutional amendment that would mandate a balanced budget. Recently, Buchanan wrote about the national debt in an op-ed.
