BRADENTON — Congressman Vern Buchanan (R-Longboat Key) will hold a listening session on jobs and the economy in Bradenton on Saturday, beginning at 11:00 a.m. in the City Hall Council Chambers.
The Congressman was honored by the Humane Society this week and also made news last week for teaming up with a liberal Democrat to help make sure that the Social Security Administration can’t go after Americans who were overpaid due to the federal government’s mistakes.
Buchanan and Senator Barbara Boxer (D-Calif) got together on the “Stop Punishing Innocent Americans Act,” which would prevent the SSA from pursuing overpayment mistakes, including seizing tax returns, if the mistakes in question are more than a decade old.
Buchanan, who was recently named to the Social Security Subcommittee of the U.S. House Ways and Means Committee, has been pushing to reform the current law since last year. Currently, thanks to a 2008 rider in the Farm Bill, the SSA can go back as long as they want, in some case decades and when the beneficiaries in question were just children.
City Hall is located at 101 Old Main Street, Bradenton, FL 34205. The Congressman's office asks that those planning to attend send an Online RSVP or call 941.951.6643 or 941.747.9081 to do it over the phone.
