A poll this week from The Economist and YouGov shows Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT) continuing to make popularity gains in primary states as well as nationally. The point difference between Sanders and Hillary Clinton, who leads in the poll by nine points nationally, is now the closest it has ever been.

Results from the data collected show that the Vermont Senator now has a 78 percent likeability rating among Dem primary voters nationwide, while Clinton's numbers showed 70 percent. But perhaps the most stark information from the poll is on electability. Almost 75 percent of Dem voters now believe that Sanders is capable of winning the White House, and 51 percent of the general public agree.

While Sanders showed significant improvement in numbers compared to past YouGov polls, public perception still sees Clinton as the eventual nominee of her party, and the winner of the Iowa Caucus, by almost 75 percent.

Another poll released Thursday by CNN shows Sanders now leading in Iowa, with 51 percent support over Clinton's 43 percent. There are less than two weeks to go before Iowa voters participate in their caucus.

While CNN's poll joins a Quinnipiac poll from early January in showing Clinton trailing behind Sanders in Iowa, a Monmouth University poll from this week shows Clinton with 48 percent support, and Sanders with 39 percent support, among Dem voters in the state.

The Economist/YouGov poll was conducted following the most recent Democratic debate, which the Democratic National Committee chose to hold on a night when many Americans were tuned into an NFL playoff game or otherwise preoccupied.
