Obama Endorses Clinton

Posted
Two days after she won the states of California, New Jersey, South Dakota and New Mexico to bring her delegate total to 2,780, President Obama endorsed former Sec. of State Hillary Clinton on Thursday, congratulating her "on making history as the presumptive Democratic nominee for President of the United States."

In his endorsement remarks, the president brushed aside the notion that the often bitter race between the Clinton and Sanders campaigns has left the Democratic Party more divided, saying: "Well, they said that eight years ago as well. But just like eight years ago, there are millions of Americans, not just Democrats, who've cast their ballots for the very first time. And a lot of that is thanks to Senator Bernie Sanders, who has run an incredible campaign."

Also on Thursday, the president met with Clinton's fellow Democratic presidential candidate and rival, Vermont Sen. Bernie Sanders. In remarks made following the meeting, Sanders thanked Obama for the meeting and for the president's–and vice president'–decision to not put "thumbs on the scales" during the Dem primary race.

Sanders also said that he looks forward to meeting with Clinton soon "to see how we can work together to defeat Donald Trump." He reiterated that his campaign would participate in the last Democratic primary contest of the cycle, Tuesday's D.C. primary, and stated he would bring his ideas to the party convention in late July.
