Obituary: Henry Sumner

Henry Ô’Harry’’ Sumner, 89, of Bradenton, FL, died March 31, 2016, at Blake Memorial Hospital after a brief illness.

Born in Plainfield, NJ on November 3, 1926 to Henry Barton and Alice Ellis Sumner, he lived his life in New Jersey before retiring to Anna Maria Island in 1987. He moved to the Perico Island community of Bradenton in 2003.

A 1944 graduate of North Plainfield High School, he served as a Technician Third Grade for the US Army in the Philippine Islands during World War II from 1945-46. Upon returning from service he graduated from Rutgers University in 1951.

He married his wife of 63 years, Winifred Anderson Sumner, April 25, 1953. In business he was employed in sales, logging in a million plus miles on the road before retiring as North Eastern Marketing Manager for Reade Moore, Inc. of NYC in 1987. He was a member of Holy Cross Episcopal Church in North Plainfield, NJ for 50 years and was an original member of the Rutgers Tri-County Alumni Association.

A proud and devoted family man, his life was centered around his loving family and watching sunsets with his bride. Nothing in life brought a smile to his face faster than spending time with his children and their families.

He was preceded in death by his parents, and his grandson, David. He is survived by his wife, Winifred; his children, Henry Anderson Sumner and his wife, Kathleen of Doylestown, PA, Dr. Richard Ellis Sumner and his wife, Sandra of St. Petersburg, FL, Ellen Sumner Sandels, widow of Bjorn Sandels of Bradenton, FL and John Barton Sumner and his wife, Leslie of Ada, MI. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren, Richard, Katie, Carolyn, Beth, Meg, Edward, Arthur and Abigail.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend a Graveside Ceremony 11:30AM, Tuesday, April 5, 2016 at Sarasota National Cemetery, 9810 State Road 72 Sarasota, FL 34241.
