pinion Letter to the Editor: School Resource Officers

Posted

It has come to my attention that the County Commissioners will not be funding the Resource Officer position, at King Middle School, and in fact, all middle schools. Therefore the sheriff’s office has no choice but to pull our deputies from the school systems next fall. Are you guys for real? This is a travesty!

My children have been going to King Middle School for the past two years. In that period of time we have experienced three different occasions of other students trying to bully my children. This is not to mention the stories my boys have told me of in school fighting, other children getting bullied, drugs on campus and sexual acts performed by students. In fact, more fights broke out on the one day that Deputy Butler was absent from school. This is only JUST the beginningÉ

Why don’t we just get rid of the principal, guidance counselors and the teachers while were at it? That would save a lot of money; we could just put the kids in class without any monitors and hope for their best behavior. You trust your children, don’t you? Unfortunately, there needs to be an authoritarian figure for the students to respect.

If we allow this to happen, I am sure us parents will be deeply sorry. The students in school today are plagued with problems other than simple academics in the school setting. Deputy Butler, we love you and we need you to stay put at King and watch our children. Please cut the big bucks administrators' salaries, and leave our Resource Officers in middle school, where they belong.

Sincerely,
Keith D. Miller
