Poll: Majority of Americans Believe Presidential Election System is Broken

Posted
The majority of Americans see their country's electoral system for president as broken, according to a poll released Friday by Gallup.

The poll found that 66 percent see the process as broken. Only 30 percent of participants describing themselves as registered Republicans and Republican-leaning independents said that they find the process to be working, a 9 percent drop from February and a 16 percent drop from January.

Democrats and independents that lean Democratic show similar small levels of faith in the process, though their numbers have been more consistent through the last two months. 32 percent of the polled group said in January that they believe the system is working; in February, that number dropped to 29 percent before going back up to 32 percent in March.

While the reasons for the 16 percent drop from January to March for the first group are not completely clear, Gallup notes that recent events in the GOP primary include front-runner Donald Trump arguably receiving the most media attention out of all the candidates by a wide margin.

Since his announcement last fall that he would run for the White House, Trump has drawn the attention in large part due to his never-ending barrage of controversial statements, arguably benefiting from the free attention on television, internet and print towards his campaign.
