ST. PETERSBURG – The Tampa Bay Rowdies kicked off their season in style Friday night, formally introducing the team, as well as a vibrant new uniform, to the community at St. Petersburg’s Mahaffey Theater.
More than 1,000 fans ushered the 2016 season in with the team at the hugely successful event.
Highlights of the night included remarks from Chairman, CEO and Governor of the Rowdies, Bill Edwards, and an address from Head Coach Stuart Campbell, the announcement of Tamika Mkandawire as club captain for the season ahead and the debut of a striking new alternate uniform.
Mkandawire, entering his third season with the Rowdies, has worn the armband numerous times as a fill-in captain, but has now earned the role full-time. An ironman in defense, Mkandawire played every single minute of last year’s campaign and recently signed a contract extension with the Rowdies.
The new uniform, modeled by forward Tommy Heinemann, features an eye-catching new alternate kit. Featuring a green gradient jersey with white shoulders and the Seminole Hard Rock of Tampa logo displayed on the front, the jersey is an attractive new design for 2016. It will be paired with crisp white shorts and socks to complete the look.
The Rowdies will also wear the popular hooped kit that debuted in 2015 and have three goalkeeper kits to choose from. The goalkeeper kits feature a solid-colored torso in black, red or volt yellow with banded sleeves.
