BRADENTON – Schoolchildren will be the first to get the H1N1 immunizations.
The Manatee County Health Department and School District are getting ready to cover the first seven public elementary schools.
”We are targeting our elementary students first as they have been identified as more at risk than middle and high school age students, as indicated in Manatee County’s laboratory syndromic surveillance data,“ said Dr. Jennifer Bencie of the Health Department. ”We expect to have all of the public elementary school clinics scheduled between now and the December holidays.“
Another schedule of clinic sites and dates will be released by mid-November as the vaccine becomes available, she said.
Students whose parents or guardians have signed a consent form will be vaccinated.
The vaccinations are to be given out based on the following schedule:
Nov. 6: Anna Maria Elementary, 3:30 to 7 p.m.
Nov. 9: Blackburn Elementary, 3:30 to 7 p.m.
Nov. 10: Bayshore Elementary, 3:30 to 7 p.m.
Nov. 12: Freedom Elementary, 3:30 to 7 p.m.
Nov. 13: Braden River Elementary, 3:30 to 7 p.m.
Nov. 16: Kinnan Elementary, 3:30 to 7 p.m.
This week, all Manatee County students will receive an information packet with consent forms and additional information on H1N1.
The School District said parents who want their children to receive the vaccine will have to return the consent forms to their school within three days after they receive it.
Parents who do not want their children vaccinated can opt out by not returning the consent form.
The Health Department and School District said parents and the community should monitor the news media and the district’s Web site for periodic updates.
