BRADENTON — On Tuesday, the Manatee County School Board approved the appointment of three members to the school district's leadership team. A new Chief Human Resource Officer, a Director of Purchasing and Manager of Security will join the district administration. All three appointments were unanimously approved by the board.
An internal audit revealed weaknesses in both human resource staffing and procurement policies. The school district also struggled through an attempt to revamp school security protocols and identified the lack of a dedicated administrator as a key weakness.
Dr. Sarah Brown will be the new Chief Human Resources Officer for the district. Dr. Brown comes to Manatee from Eugene, Oregon where she served as the Director of Human Resources for the Eugene School District.
According to the district, she has 15-plus years in leadership experience in Human Resources and Development including as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources and Development for the Bassett Unified School District in La Puente, California and in a variety of Human Resource capacities with the Los Angeles County Office of Education in Downey, California.
Dr. Brown has a Bachelor of Education from Montana State University, a Master of Educational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University in Fort Lauderdale, Florida and a Doctor of Education Organizational Leadership from Nova Southeastern University.
Dr. Brown began her educational career as an Elementary School Teacher in Hillsborough County, Florida.
Cliff Chroust will be the Director of Purchasing for the district. Chroust comes here from Tallahassee, where he worked for the Division of State Purchasing at the Florida Department of Management Services.
He has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Economics from the University of California at Santa Barbara and a Master of Business Administration from Chapman University in Orange, California.
Chroust is also a Certified Project Management Professional from Project Management Institute. He serves as Finance Chair for the Florida Association of Public Procurement Officials and as a contributor on the National Association of State Procurement Officials Body of Knowledge review.
Prior to working for the State of Florida he worked in Europe as Director of Operations EMEA for Duke Manufacturing CR. He has been recognized twice by the Governor of Florida for delivering savings to the State.
Troy Nelson will be the district's Manager of Security. Nelson served as a police officer since 1999, in Mason, Ohio. He has a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminology and Sociology from The Ohio State University.
During his time with the Mason Police Department, Nelson served as a School Resource Officer and was a Practitioner with the National Association of School Resource Officers where he earned advanced training as an SRO. He was also twice named the Officer of the Year for that Department.
Prior to his employment as a police officer, Nelson was the Security Operations Manager at Kings Island theme park in Ohio.
