The Manatee County School Board held a special meeting on Thursday to address the agenda originally scheduled for Monday, August 27th. Issues discussed during the meeting included the ongoing conflict between the pro-charter school movement and its opposition, as well as a proposal by board member Robert Gause to take a stab at reforming the district's requirement which states that if one school has to be closed for the day, all others in the county must close as well. Board member Karen Carpenter was not able to physically attend, and so particpated via speaker phone and live online streaming video.

Public Comments - p.14 During public comments, the contentious issue of charter schools and the controversial "Parent Trigger Bill" reared its head during the session, with Christine Sket from the group Fund Education Now speaking in opposition to the agenda of the bill's pro-charter school supporters. The issue of Southeast High School's recently deposed principal also came up during public comments, as two citizens spoke before the board in support of Ms. Catherine Smith. Dave "Watchdog" Miner ended public comments with a call to parents to become more involved in the schools of their kids by participating in School Advisory Councils.

School Board Proposed Agenda Items - p.39 In light of Monday's closing of all Manatee schools due to what turned out to be Isaac's mild tropical storming of the region, board member Robert Gause mentioned that currently, if one school in the district has to close for a day due to a storm, all others must close as well. He asked that the board consider a possible change to the policy so that if one school has to shut down (for example, due to threatening weather in its area), other schools (that may not be threatened by said weather) do not automatically have to shut down as well.

35. Board Comments - p.40 In light of his successful re-election campaign, Mr. Gause took time to say thanks to the community "...for entrusting me for four more years to serve this community. Second, I want to commend all the teachers... and I want to acknowledge what Mr. Miner said - advisory councils are important to our schools." Board member Julie Aranibar brought up her concern of possible conflict of interest occuring when some of Florida's elected officials - who also happen to be paid consultants of charter school companies - vote on issues affecting the state's education system. "(Those officials) should not be voting on school issues," she said.
