State College of Florida to Offer Three New Four-Year Degrees

A year after State College of Florida, Manatee-Sarasota (SCF) won approval to offer its first baccalaureate degree, the Bachelor of Science in Nursing, the SCF District Board of Trustees at a meeting on April 21 celebrated another milestone in the College’s progress: the recent approval of three new baccalaureate degrees.

SCF Board Chairman Steve Harner said, ”While we are the same two-year college we have been for the past 53 years, the recent approval of these three new baccalaureate degrees strengthens our role as a college of the community.“

The Florida State Board of Education (SBE) at its March meeting approved SCF’s proposals to offer a Bachelor of Science degree in early childhood education, and Bachelor of Applied Science degrees in health services administration and public safety administration/homeland security. The new degree programs are scheduled to start in 2011.

The SBE described the proposal for a Bachelor of Applied Science degree in energy technology as ”visionary“ and said it would be considered at the Board’s May or June meeting.

SCF’s workforce baccalaureate proposals were developed in response to requests from community and business leaders and professionals in the fields, said SCF President Dr. Lars A. Hafner.

”Gaining approval to offer these new workforce baccalaureate degrees supports our plan and vision for responding to the community. We will continue listening to business partners and community members who currently are requesting more baccalaureate degrees,“ Hafner said.

Trustee Kelvin Lumpkin said he was pleased with Dr. Hafner’s vision and foresight to expand SCF’s mission.

”I’m excited to be a part of this school,“ he said. ”The direction Dr. Hafner is taking is helping us serve the community, and our best days are ahead.“
