U.S. Congressman Connie Mack |
BRADENTON – After Republicans utterly routed Democrats in 2010 Florida statewide elections, sights quickly turned to the one statewide seat still held by Democrats – Senator Bill Nelson. Challengers poured into a crowded field, which managed to draw a lot of financial support and still hasn't fully shaken out.
Ironically, the top fundraiser so far, Florida Senate President Mike Haridopolos, actually dropped out of the race last summer. Late entrant Connie Mack has since made a big splash, but still trails Nelson by about 10 points in most recent polls, though some polls were closer. He has, however, caught up with George Lemieux and Adam Hasner in fundraising and is ahead of both in the primary polls, in what is increasingly looking like his race to lose. Former Ruth's Chris CEO Craig Miller raised over $400,000, but trailing in the polls, announced he will run for a newly drawn U.S. House seat instead.
Nelson, whose seat the DNC sees as vital to retain, has managed to build a massive war chest, raising upward of $6 million just in 2011, only a little less than the entire Republican field combined. Whether Mack or another candidate emerges from the primary with enough resources to challenge the moderate Democrat's lead remains to be seen.
Contribution totals as of most recent report:
Senator Bill Nelson, Democratic incumbent: $5,664,132
Mike Haridopolis, Florida Senate President (already announced his withdrawal): $3,533,573
George Lemieux, former interim U.S. Senator after Mel Martinez's retirement: $1,354,516
Connie Mack IV, sitting U.S. Rep: $1,182,110
Adam Hasner, former Majority Leader in FL House: $1,100,358
Craig Miller $424,004
