Tables played at 'Casino Royale' supported charities in the community

Posted

BRADENTON -- Even in the rain, wind and bad economy, folks tried their luck at the Rotary Club of Anna Maria Island’s ÔCasino Royale’ playing tables and won for charity.

On Friday night, the Rotary Club hosted its eighth annual fundraising event in Holmes Beach at the St. Bernard’s Church and Activity Center.

The money raised through ticket sales, donations and games at the event will be distributed to local community organizations and international charities, too, once all the numbers are tallied.

Tom Creed is a member of the Rotary Club, and he was in charge of ticket sales and entertainment for the event. He said the weather on Friday night did not affect ticket sales.

”We didn’t really have a goal when we first started planning the event, but we certainly raised quite a bit more money than we thought we ever would,“ he said.

Creed added that he believes they sold over 185 $50.00 tickets, and that money doesn’t include the money raised during the actual event.

”We definitely exceeded expectation,“ he said.

But the tough economy was a hurdle for the Rotary Club members to work with, Creed admitted.

”There’s no question about it that the tough economic times have people not spending as freely as they normally would,“ he said. ”It was a much tougher sell this year.“

The Bradenton Times will check back in with the Rotary Club of Anna Maria Island to find out the final figure for the money raised at the event and where it’s heading.
