BRADENTON – Governor Rick Scott gave his first indication that he may be at least somewhat open to compromise on the high speed rail project planned for Tampa/Orlando. Scott, who made major waves when he said he was sending back $2.6 billion in federal funds for the project last week, says he still does not believe that the U.S. Department of Transportation can devise a plan that will alleviate Florida of any risk of future costs.
Senator bill Nelson, a supporter of the project, says that he is working close with U.S. Secretary of Transportation Ray LaHood to do just that and expressed optimism that the deal would get done. Meanwhile, U.S. Representative Kathy Castor (D-Tampa) said she is working with a coalition of smaller government bodies to keep the project alive should Scott continue to balk. The project would then reportedly be privatized and still require the state to grant usage of the right of ways it has purchased.
