Any possible momentum of a contested GOP convention sputtered after Tuesday's Indiana primary, where Donald Trump saw his already dominant lead in delegates grow by 51. The business magnate's victory prompted Sen. Ted Cruz's exit from the race, deflating the hopes of the "Never Trump" Republican movement while emboldening the political newcomer.

"From the beginning I’ve said that I would continue on as long as there was a viable path to victory. With a heavy heart but with boundless optimism for the long-term future of our nation, we are suspending our campaign," Cruz said during his concession speech, after Trump was declared the winner of Tuesday's contest.

Though the campaign of Ohio Gov. John Kasich put out a press release Tuesday night advising he would stay in the Republican presidential race until Trump secures the 1,237 delegates needed to secure the party's nomination, sources close to the candidate confirmed Wednesday afternoon that Kasich has now decided to suspend his campaign as well. The candidate only won his home state during the primary; lingering long after he was mathematically eliminated from the race, he based his stay on the idea of winning an open convention.
