Dimitrios (Jimmy) K. Sokos, 79, was called home on October 19, 2014. Born in Messini, Greece on January 9, 1935, he was the eldest child of farmers Kostantinos and Aggeliki Sokos. As the first Sokos to complete high school, Dimitrios carried on their farming legacy as a produce broker. After a short courtship he married the love of his life, Helen Eliopoulos in October 1962, and became a father to their son, Gus in 1964.
In April of 1970 Dimitrios seized the chance to build a better life for his family in America. By saving his earnings, he was able to bring his wife and son to this country by Christmas. Within two years of working in New York and learning English, Dimitrios bought his own business, a small but popular donut shop in Astoria, NY.
A family business opportunity brought the Sokoses to Bradenton, where Demetrios’ Pizza House was established in 1976, steadily building a loyal customer base that supports his family to this day. In 1985, he fulfilled the promise to his parents to rebuild their decaying, hundred-year-old home in Greece.
Splitting time between Greece and Florida, he enjoyed returning each summer to his friends, but always considered America his home. “Jimmy the Greek” or “Pizzeria,” as he was known, will always be remembered for his generosity, kindness, joyous spirit, and infectious love of life. He garnered the respect of customers, employees and peers for his tremendous work ethic and set a strong example to respect and treat everyone equally regardless of status.
He was an avid sports fan and loved to play cards with his friends, and never missed a chance to dance or break plates in true Greek fashion. Dimitrios was involved with the original St. Barbara Greek Orthodox Church on 9th Street West, and instrumental in the new Church construction at its present location on Lockwood Ridge Road.
He is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Helen; son, Gus; daughter-in-law, Lisa; granddaughters, Eleni and Dimitra; sister-in-law, Paula Ludera and her husband, Jim; niece, Tina Whyte her husband, Mathew and their children, Stephen, James, and Paulina; nephew, Anthony Ludera and his wife, Nikita, all of Bradenton. Four siblings: Nicholas (Maria) Sokos, of Tarpon Springs; Stavroula (Dimitris) Kourahanis; Georgia (Adam) Ifantidis and Polyxeni (George) Mariolis, all of Greece.
