WAPO Feature Profiles Rubonia in the Wake of Two Hurricanes

Posted

MANATEE COUNTY — On Thursday, the Washington Post ran a feature story on Rubonia, one of the oldest communities in Manatee County.

Journalists Annie Gowen and Emmanuel Felton interviewed residents of the unincorporated community that was established in 1912, many of whom questioned whether Rubonia can survive in today's landscape.

Rubonia experienced intense flooding during Hurricane Idalia in 2023, and the one-two punch of Helene and Milton has severely impacted essentially every house that isn't on high elevation or stilts. Click here to read the Washington Post's story.
