Weekend Adventures, Bradenton

Posted

Get the weekend started early with Dave Mankes at the corner of 12th Street and Sixth Street West for the Courthouse Square Concert series held every Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Mankes’ mix of jazz piano hits, Latin music and world music is sure to have everyone stepping into their weekend with style and rhythm, even if the work day is still in motion.

At 6 p.m., if you are over the age of 21 and want a hint of Aruba-grown tobacco, then ”’Aruhiba’ Cigar Night“ at Cork’s Cigar Bar, located off Old Main Street, is the place to enjoy cigars and watch a cigar rolling demonstration.

”This is a cigar that is not currently available in the United States,“ Cork Miller said about this Aruba exclusive cigar.

Miller said the tobacco is completely harvested and distributed from Aruba, and freshly rolled cigars will be used as door prizes. A scotch tasting will also be offered this evening and admission is free.

Some may prefer a more tranquil setting for their evening entertainment, and that's why an event for the entire family starting at 7 p.m. in Rossi Park is the ideal movie destination by the water.

Reels at Rossi Park will be presenting ”The Express.“ The family friendly PG movie is based on a true story and certain to inspire and motivate all enjoying the film.

It's an account of the life of Ernie Davis, the first African-American football player to win the Heisman Trophy, and it’s a story about one man’s dreams to overcome during the civil rights movement.

On Saturday morning from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., head out and support local artists and artisans while picking up your fresh produce and flowers at the Downtown Bradenton Farmers’ Market & Mainly Art exhibit. You can also hear the background sounds of acoustic guitarist Gary Reilly.

Mainly Art booths include a variety of creative crafts, jewelry, artworks and furniture. Anna Pohl, who is the organizer for Mainly Art, says people have a lot of reasons to visit the market on Saturday.

"One reason is that we are going to have a vendor who has amazing, artistic kites," Pohl said. "Another reason is that we have a few artisians that are creating works for your home and items to incorporate into your living space. It's also the holidays and time to buy your gifts."

After enjoying the festivities of Old Main Street, head over to the Cortez Folk Festival.

This festival is held on the grounds of the Florida Maritime Museum in Cortez, and will feature arts and crafts, food and drinks, folk music, boat shop exhibits and guided tours.

On Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m everyone is invited to the HHO Games at Bayshore High School. It’s an event where hydrogen fans, developers and inventors mix, mingle and compare notes, offer displays, demonstrate hydrogen generators and related technology, and hear speakers all day at a fast-moving series of seminars.

Joe Shea is the organizer of the event and says it’s a very full day and great for the whole family.

”We are an educational organization and offer free seminars all day,“ he said. ”Every kid is free.“

Adults will have to pay $5 to get in, senior citizens' admission is $2 and the disabled get in free.

Why should people be interested in hydrogen powered transportation?

Shea said the chief spokesman for the U.S. Department of Energy said it’s important.

”Because by 2050 hydrogen is going to replace petroleum entirely in the United States,“ Shea said. ”Another important reason is because people can save a lot of money on gas.“

Even if hydrogen power doesn’t get you going, the event is worth a visit to see the bike of the future.

The event is also on Saturday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
