In an effort to better inform voters, TBT invited all candidates for Mosquito Control and Fire District boards in Manatee County to share with our readers, in their own words, why they think they would be the best candidate. Seat 3 in the West Manatee Fire District sees retired Human Resources manager Larry Tyler take on Al Robinson.
Larry C Tyler Jr:
My career in Human Resources with the City of Beloit, Wisconsin responsible for contract negotiations with seven unions; managing and administering Health, Life and disability Insurance programs; Workers Compensation; Liability Insurance.
Experience with the Fire and EMS services were a major part of my work. Being Secretary to the Police and Fire Commission, (the agency responsible for hiring, dismissal and promotion), provided a wealth of experience for me recommending to the commission their course of action.
Assisted in developing a Fire Science program in 1976, in which firefighters earned an Associate's Degree upon completion of the program. Today, it is the equivalent of the Fire Certification that all firefighters must have to be employed as a firefighter.
Established ice cream business (Tyler's Ice Cream) which gave me the opportunity to experience starting and running a successful business.
Having over 28 years experience in the fire service, I believe, sets my platform based on an efficient fire district for both citizens and well trained personnel.
