SARASOTA -- New York native Frank Creaturo navigates freely in different phases of art, including sculpting, acrylic and 3D. Various art forms are his path to different phases of expression. His new works in his studio gallery downtown Sarasota connect his art expressions and feature collages with acrylic in vivid colors and movements–different times and feelings in Creaturo’s life.
”I change like the weather,“ he said. ”I LOVE ALL THINGS THAT HAVE TO DO WITH ART. Some people can learn from books or from other people, but I've only been able to learn from Doing...Touching, Feeling, Tasting, ROLLING AROUND IN IT! That’s ME.“
When he was a student at School of Industrial Art and at School of Art and Design in NYC, his sculptor teacher and mentor, Frank Elisque encouraged him to explore different forms of art. And Creaturo does: he produced music shows in New York, promoted different music groups in England, while sculpting and painting, and moving from one art experience to the next. Since he retired to Sarasota 23 yearsago, Creaturo has been painting more and more fine art works. He has also been active in many charity events and non-profit organizations, including Hospice, American Diabetes Foundation, Big Brothers & Big Sisters, and Make a Wish.
”When you wake up in the morning, every day is different,“ he said. ”I have different feelings and I have to be able to express myself. Doing the same things can become boring and uncreative.“

The Brooklyn-born artist started out as a child sculptor. His long train commutes to school turned into art projects: the subjects of his first drawings and sketches were people on the train.
New York scenes and people are the center of his Old New York gallery: Daily News, Hot Soup and The Gin Mill -- Creaturo documents the nostalgic era and social strata of the 50's and 60's. He captures working class neighbors doing everyday activities, trading chicken and kosher food, children playing hopscotch.
And he finds balance in contemporary art works. Creaturo combines old black and white photos with news clippings and transforms them into collages. The artist’s aspiration for geometrical forms, colors and light transpires into his highly-organized abstract artworks, including Back in Time and Into the Future.

”I believe in that what I do is for a reason, for beauty and for understanding,“ he said.“I like to work with depth and texture. Balance is very important to me whether it is abstract, collage and sculpture.
