Theater Review: Your Arms Too Short To Box With God

Posted
The Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe (WBTT) makes a joyful noise with their latest production, Your Arms Too Short To Box With God. The show is written by playwright, actress and director, Vinnette Carroll and is inspired by the Book of Matthew.

Directed by Harry Bryce, the musical tells the story of Jesus’ (Charles Wesley Lattimore Jr.) miracles and ultimate crucifixion.

The show’s title derives from a phrase that was used in the James Weldon Johnson novel, "The Autobiography of An Ex-Colored Man.“ In regards to a preacher, Weldon wrote, "He struck the attitude of a pugilist and thundered out, 'Young man, yo’ arm’s too short to box wid God!'“

The multi-generational cast includes a variety of talented actors and dancers. WBTT founding member, Teresa Stanely, is gifted beyond words. Stanley’s solo "I Love You So Much Jesus“ is glorious. Her vocal range is reminiscent of the legendary Ms. Patti Labelle, who starred in the 1982 Broadway version with Al Green. Stanley’s singing is effortless and she captures your attention with her striking beauty and confident stage presence.

Syreeta Banks is another WBTT standout with a divine voice. Her title song "Your Arms Too Short to Box With God“ as Pontius Pilate’s wife, is her shining moment. Banks carries herself with poise and she looks radiant in her purple gown designed by Adrienne Pitts.

When Raleigh Mosely II sings, "There’s a Stranger in Town,“ you are instantly entranced. His voice is commanding in an awe-inspiring way. I always look forward to hearing him sing because he’s that good.

Other standouts are "Something is Wrong in Jerusalem“ and "See How They Done my Lord“ by WBTT newcomer, Cequita Monique. A Memphis resident, Monique gave a stirring and sometimes heartwrenching debut performance and I hope to see her in future WBTT shows.

The live house band led by Musical Director and bassist, Jay Dodge, provides the sweet gospel soundtrack with music and lyrics written by Alex Bradford and Micki Grant. The five musicians (Courtland Green, Jeff Cash, Jr., Mike Andrews, Benny Maldonado and Dodge) blend well together and really create an authentic gospel experience.

Many black churches incorporate African traditions in their services and there is a lot of African influence in this show including the wardrobe and choreography by Donald Frison. Frison performs an amazing dance solo as Jesus’ betrayer, Judas.

WBTT regular, Chakara Rosa, really shines in her spotlighted moments. The trained dancer has been in several WBTT productions over the seasons, and she makes her mark in this show especially.

The entire ensemble is an answered prayer. When they sing together, you feel the energy in the room.
"Your Arms too Short“ is a masterclass in song and dance. This show is colorful, loud and proud. From the opening number to the final song, you’ll be glad you witnessed this inspirational performance.

"Your Arms Too Short to Box with God“ runs until April 5th. For tickets visit westcoastblacktheatre.org or call the box office at 941-366-1505.
