LAKEWOOD RANCH – At Tuesday's meeting, Manatee County Commissioners voted to approve the acquisition of 75 additional acres at the Premier Sports Campus. The $4.6 million purchase will beused to house a future library, as well as satellite county offices.
Manatee County purchased the 126.9-acre east county athletic complex from developer Schroeder-Manatee Ranch last year at a cost of $5.2 million. The acquisition represents an option that was part of the original sale, plus 21.5 additional acres that were added.
Manatee County Administrator Ed Hunzeker had originally told the board that the county would need permanent office space for the utilities department, as well as constitutional officers, including the Manatee Sheriff's Office, clerk of the courts and the tax collector.
Future expansion plans that have been discussed for the facility include an aquatics center, a softball complex, a baseball complex, a tennis complex, a gymnasium, and a small amphitheater.
