Giving Hunger the Blues Turns 20 with Sunday's Anniversary Blowout

Posted
SARASOTA – It’s hard to believe that the best local music festival in the area will celebrate its 20th anniversary this Sunday, but promoter Peter Anderson has pulled together a worthy celebration that includes the area’s very best musical acts for a full day of tunes that will include everything from rock to funk to blues. GHTB20 is a local music lover’s dream that also happens to be for a very worthy cause.

Due to construction on Hillview Avenue, this year’s event has moved to the outside area of the Van Wezel Performing Arts Center, where there will be no less than three stages of music. The action will kick off on the main stage at noon with the Fogt’s Music All-Stars.

At 1 p.m., Sarasota’s first lady of rock Ôn’ roll takes the stage. Twinkle & Rock Soul Radio are without question one of the best local acts I’ve ever seen. From their first-rate original material to unique covers of your favorite rock classics from the Ô70s and Ô80s, the band brings an incomparable energy and vibe to every single performance. Their cover of Guns & Roses’ Sweet Child O’ Mine, featuring dead-on guitar licks by Lenny Brooks is nothing short of astonishing.

Twinkle & RSR are a tough act to follow, but Anderson wisely booked the one and only Ari & the Alibis, who are scheduled to take the stage at 2:30. I can never shake the feeling that this band is on the verge of mainstream success, with one of the most unique sounds I’ve ever experienced. A rock solid line-up of eclectic musicians who come together to form the perfect fusion of rock, blues, jazz and funk, Ari & the Alibis are an act no one forgets. A flamenco guitar, a trombone, a jazz bass, funk percussion and of course, Ari’s vocal and songwriting skills, combine for a signature sound that can’t be beat.

At 4 p.m. Reverend Barry & Funktastic Soul featuring the Hellacious Horns takes the stage, just a day after the release of their new CD: SxyGdLuv. There’s only one word to describe this band: FUN! Reverend Barry and company crank out energetic covers of your favorite party songs from the Ô70s, Ô80’s and Ô90s with the benefit of the best horn section on the Gulf Coast. Check them out and you’ll quickly discover why they are consistently voted the area’s best dance band.

At 5:30, the area’s premier reggae band Jah Movement takes the stage. In a genre that often suffers a lot of generic poseurs, Jah Movement is as authentic as it gets and has become the go-to Gulf Coast band for reggae enthusiasts. At 6:55, they’ll be followed by the Gumbo Boogie Band, a two-decade act that’s well known locally for their regular Sunday gigs at Ace’s Live. This energetic rock/zydeco/jazz group brings an authentic New Orleans feel that always cranks the party up a notch.

At 7:45, headliners RJ Howson and Friends take the stage for what is sure to be a real showstopper. Howson came up in Chicago where he learned the blues alongside some of the most legendary names in the genre. A couple of years ago, Howson relocated to Sarasota, where he’s found an eager audience for his old-school guitar riffs and genre-bending vocals that call to mind a Chi-town spin on Stevie Ray Vaughan. Howson will be joined by an all-star cast of local musicians including Chuck Riley and Pat McDonald, with special guests Berry Duane Oakley, Mike Kach, Garrett Dawson and more.
