Manatee County Moves Evacuation Zone B to Mandatory

Posted
BRADENTON – At a Manatee County Commission meeting Tuesday, Manatee County Administrator Scott Hopes announced that hurricane evacuation zone B has been moved to mandatory evacuation status as Hurricane Ian continues to move toward the gulf coast. Solid waste pick-ups are taking place as scheduled Tuesday. However, garbage and recycling are canceled through the rest of the week.

"I ordered this morning, mandatory evacuations for level A and level B, and highly, highly, highly, highly recommended, but voluntary, if you are in level C, and that includes Ware's Creek because it looks like the level C, you are gonna get water as well."

Hopes reminded residents that anyone, regardless of evac level, can access the county shelters and added, "If you are in a mobile home, please, please evacuate before sunset today. If you are in a mobile home, regardless of where it is, evacuate before this evening."

Two additional Manatee County schools were opened as shelters today, for a total of seventeen. Click here for a full list. You can check your evacuation zone here.

At 8:00 p.m. Tuesday, the Sarasota Bradenton International Airport will close to all air traffic and the terminal will be locked and secured. The airport terminal is not a shelter.

Signs along Cortez Blvd and Manatee Avenue will begin instructing motorists that there is "No Westbound Access" to the gulf islands beginning at 4 p.m. Utility crews will be shutting off the potable water service to the barrier islands by sunset tonight to help maintain the integrity of the infrastructure during Ian’s passage.

Residents are urged to bring their storm preparations to completion today, and the county landfill will be open for extended hours (through 6 p.m.) with no fees, then remain closed through Friday.

Manatee County Area Transit (MCAT) will suspend all fixed routes as of 6 p.m.
