The Florida Senate has before it two bills (SB 1334/HB 991) requiring the state to re-verify the citizenship status of ALL current voters. Your right to vote may be delayed, depending on how long it will take Florida to re-verify its more than 13 million voters. The League of Women Voters of Florida warns that millions of Floridians "could get caught in their bureaucratic web.”
If your certification to vote is rejected, you’ll need to resubmit proof of citizenship with a valid passport, official birth certificate, or other government document. This simply makes the voting process harder for seniors, married women who have changed their name, and people rebuilding after disasters who may not have immediate access to their paperwork.
There is no justification for these bills other than political motivation. Attempting to register or vote illegally is already a third-degree felony in Florida. According to the Heritage Foundation, between 2020 and 2025 there were only 15 cases of ineligible voters in Florida involving non-citizens.
We must stand up against this insane attack on our democracy and strongly urge state Senator Jim Boyd at (850) 487-5020 and Senator Joe Gruters at (850) 487-5022 to vote against these bills.
