BRADENTON -- Jim Van Pelt has earned this honor by demonstrating his long-term dedication to working in The Transportation Disadvantaged (TD) program. Jim is the Public Transportation Planner for the Sarasota/Bradenton Metropolitan Planning Organization, and his work with the TD program brings pride to all who work for the MPO.

The award was created in honor of Ms. Sheila Winitzer and her selfless work to support the economically disadvantaged, physical or mentally challenged and senior citizens without transportation means.

The program dates back to the 1980's. It is mandated by Florida Statute and overseen by the Florida Commission for the Transportation Disadvantaged. There is a Community Transportation Coordinator (CTC) in all of the 67 counties in Florida .

In Manatee County, the CTC is MCAT, and in Sarasota County, the CTC is SCAT. The TD Program is a door to door on demand service, providing thousands of trips each year.

MPO Executive Director, Michael Howe, and Planning Director, David Hutchinson, proudly delivered the award at Monday's MPO meeting

We should all be inspired by Jim Van Pelt's kind, noble and benevolent care. TBT salutes him for applying it where it is needed most.
