Bilingual Play Next Up for American Stage

Posted

ST PETERSBURG Next Friday, American Stage in downtown St. Pete will open La Gringa, a bilingual play that delves into themes of identity, culture, and belonging. The groundbreaking production has been lauded for its authentic portrayal of language diversity and the vibrant Puerto Rican experience.

La Gringa tells the story of Maria, a young woman of Puerto Rican descent who embarks on a journey of self-discovery when she visits her family's homeland for the first time. Born and raised in the United States, Maria grapples with her own cultural identity while navigating the complexities of a complex world. The play, written by Carmen Rivera, explores the intersection of language, heritage, and personal growth.

You don't have to be bilingual to appreciate the experience, however, as ""the true essence of the multicultural experience"" is part of the point.

""The work I do is mainly in bilingual plays,"" said director Tatayna- Marie Carlo. ""I am originally from Miami, Florida so that means that everything around me has always been in two languages. Having a room that is filled with both languages means that I don't have to translate. It means if there is something more intentional in Spanish I can say it that way, or if it is more specific in English I can do it that way and I don't have to sacrifice language for communication.""

Characters speak in English and Spanish based on their backgrounds and the emotional nuances of each scene. This unique approach aims to provide a genuine representation of the bilingual reality many individuals navigate every day.

The production will run through August 13 at the Raymond James Theatre in downtown St. Petersburg. Click here for ticket information.
