BRADENTON -- Officer Phillip Smolinsky has been named the Bradenton Police Department’s Officer of the Month for September after a routine traffic stop resulted in an armed standoff, in which both suspects surrendered. Two stolen, high-powered assault rifles were recovered from the vehicle and the subjects were arrested on multiple charges.

From BPD:

Around 1:15 a.m. on Aug. 7, Officer Smolinsky conducted a traffic stop in the 1400 block of 10th Avenue East. Following the traffic stop, the driver and two passengers fled the area; the driver dropped a semi-automatic handgun as he fled. Following a brief stand-off in a near by residence, both suspects surrendered. Officers located two loaded, high-powered assault rifles in the back seat of the vehicle, which was later determined to have been stolen. The subjects were arrested.
