Bradenton City Council Agenda Results: May 14, 2014

BRADENTON - At Wednesday's regular meeting, the Bradenton City Council approved first readings for ordinances that would make revisions to the retirement system for the city's police officers. The council also voted to approve a planned clubhouse for the Pittsburgh Pirates' Spring Training Camp that would be funded through the Pirates organization and a $250,000 contribution from the city's Enterprise Fund.

Pirate City and McKechnie Field – Capital Projects (Vote to approve project for clubhouse passed unanimously)

City Clerk Carl Callahan gave a presentation on the design for a new proposed Pirates Spring Training Clubhouse at 1611 9th Street West. "The plan you have in front of you is a proposal to build a new Pirates clubhouse (which will be accessible to the public), he said. Callahan also said that the project would by funded wholly by the Pirates organization with a $250,000 contribution from the city's Enterprise Fund. The project must be completed prior to Pirates players arriving for 2015 Spring Training.

Gene Gallo - "It's always nice to see Commisioners Chappie and Whitmore attending our meetigs. It doesn't go unnoticed, and we appreciate you taking interest."

Gene Brown - "The 2014 FSL All Star Game is in town."

Patrick Roff: "Mr. Timothy Polk informed me that we're going to have the first Village of the Arts Expansion Ad-hoc Committee meeting ... to kind of kick the village into the next level of success ... this is assignment number 1 (for that plan)."

Bemis Smith: "Nothing to report."

Harold Byrd: Spoke about the recent improvments made to Love Park, and invited the public to join in on the park's grand reopening on May 20 at 10 am. "I want to thank the CRA for their work on this," he said.

Mayor Wayne Poston mentioned the upcoming film Million Dollar Arm, which is partly-based on Marauders pitcher Rinku Singh. Poston called Singh "a terrific young man ... and a great asset to the community," and said he hopes the pitcher grows stronger after his pending ligament reconstruction arm surgery, or "Tommy John surgery."
