Bradenton City Council weighs putting term limits and mayoral limitations on Nov. ballot

Posted

BRADENTON — Last Wednesday, the Bradenton City Council gave first readings to two ordinances that, if approved, would place two charter amendments before voters on the November general election ballot. One would ask voters to decide whether to implement term limits for council members, and the other would redefine the role of the mayor.

Term Limits

If voters approve term limits, the city charter would be amended to limit both the mayor and city council members to three full, consecutive four-year terms in the same office. The limit would take effect in the January 2028 term. An official who serves three consecutive terms would have to sit out two years before seeking the same office again.

Mayor

The mayor currently serves as “ex officio president of the Council” and can cast a tie-breaking vote in the event of a stalemate on the five-ward council. The amendment would remove the “ex officio president of the Council” designation and tie-breaking vote option, while adding language explicitly stating that the mayor is not a member of the city council.

Final readings and public hearings are scheduled for June 10. Council members would have the option to vote down either ordinance at the June 10 final reading.

Why do they want to take the mayor off being the tie breaker vote? Why do they not want the mayor to be a council member? I am not for or against, I just want to understand what the issue is about?
