With a heart as big as her laugh, Brenetta McAfee, of Hammond, Indiana, passed on October 20, 2025, at the age of 78. Born on June 17, 1947, in the vibrant city of Chicago, Illinois, Brenetta was a steadfast daughter, devoted mother, caring sister, and an unforgettable friend.
A proud graduate of Lakeview High School, Brenetta continued her education at the University of Chicago, where she pursued her passion for childcare and later became a cherished nurse at the University of Chicago Hospital. Her patients often remarked on her ambition, honesty, and remarkable sense of humor-qualities that made her not just a caregiver, but a true advocate for those she served.
Brenetta was strict when necessary, a trait that ultimately underlined her love and commitment to her family. She was the glue that held her loved ones together, always offering a guiding hand and a warm, reassuring presence. A solid rock in the whirlwind of life, she laid down the law in a loving manner that endeared her to everyone she encountered. Brenetta truly embodied the role of a matriarch, with a family that includes her husband, James McAfee; children Frederick, Lori, Edyie, Chris, Phil, Grady, and Athea; and her grandchildren who were her pride and joy, including Frederick, Kimberly, Michael, Trice, Will, Richard, Chris, Clara, Janice, Sterling, Kelly, Neil, Jameka, and Terra. With the number of lives she touched, it's safe to bet she had more than her fair share of loving hugs to give out-"because a mother's hug lasts long after she lets go."
Outside of her nursing career, she delighted in her walks, enjoyed watching her favorite TV shows, and could often be found playing games with family, always with a twinkle in her eye and a well-timed quip ready to lighten the room. The final farewell will take place at Burns-Kish Funeral Home, located at 5840 Holman Ave, Hammond, Indiana, on October 25, 2025.
A wake will be held from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m., followed by a service from 11:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be sent to the family home at 4623 McCook Ave, Hammond, Indiana. Brenetta's legacy of love, laughter, and family devotion will continue to thrive in the hearts of all who knew her.
She may have left us physically, but her spirit-complete with her sharp wit and unmatched affection-will forever remain in our midst.
