BRADENTON — U.S. Rep. Vern Buchanan (R-Longboat Key) credited the American people with the diplomatic solution on Syria that was reached over the weekend. The Congressman said the agreement was made possible because they stood up and expressed "loud opposition to a unilateral military strike by the United States."   

Buchanan said that more than 95 percent of the phone calls and emails to his office from constituents have been against American intervention.

"Democracy worked," said Buchanan in a statement. "The people's voice was heard by the politicians in Washington and we avoided a unilateral American military assault that could have had dangerous consequences."

Buchanan supported an international solution, saying that doing so could "avoid an ill-advised military strike."

"Although the president wanted to launch an attack, I commend him for pausing long enough to let the American people and Congress weigh in. And in the end, that is why we are now moving toward an international response that does not inject America into a civil war in the Middle East."
