Catch of the Week

Joe Darr, from Orlando, FL, fished Sarasota Bay with Capt. Rick Grassett and caught and released this bluefish on an Ultra Hair Clouser fly.

Governor Rick Scott  announced that he will be adding four additional license-free fishing days. The FWC has eliminated a supplemental recreational red snapper harvest, and a closure for several grouper species in Gulf waters, providing anglers with additional fishing opportunities. They have also passed two new measures for catching tarpon: anglers can no longer snag a tarpon in its body, nor use a weight that hangs lower than their hook when fishing for them.

Fishing Update

Gov. Scott, FWC add 4 more license-free fishing days to calendar

  • Governor Rick Scott and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission announced four additional license-free fishing days.
  • Florida currently offers the public four license-free fishing days per year, where the requirement to have a recreational fishing license is waived for residents and visitors. Saltwater license-free fishing days this year were on June 1 and Sept. 1 and freshwater’s were April 6 and June 8.
  • During its Sept. 5 meeting, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) added four more license-free fishing days to the calendar, and the Florida Legislature approved this increase earlier this year.

The additional saltwater license-free fishing days will be Oct. 12 and Nov. 30 and additional freshwater license-free days will be Nov. 29 and Dec. 28.

  • The Commission also set dates for 2014 and beyond. All eight days will now fall on the same day of the week from year to year, allowing potential anglers to plan fishing trips in advance.

For 2014 and beyond, the following dates will be license-free fishing days:

Saltwater

  • First Saturday and Sunday in June
  • First Saturday in September
  • Saturday following Thanksgiving

Freshwater

  • First Saturday and Sunday in April
  • Second Saturday and Sunday in June
  • To make these events accessible to as many people as possible, the FWC planned these dates around holiday weekends and national events and National Fishing and Boating Week. Highlighted by significant national media coverage and public events, National Fishing and Boating Week promotes boating and fishing across the country as fun and healthy outdoor activities.
  • Plan your fishing experience today, but don’t forget, all other regulations such as seasons, size limits and bag limits still apply on these days. Visit MyFWC.com/Fishing to learn more about saltwater and freshwater fishing in Florida.

Weekly Fishing Report by Capt. Rick Grassett

Capt. Rick DePaiva, from Ft. Myers, FL, battles a tarpon jumped on a fly while fishing the coastal gulf with Capt. Rick Grassett.

Anglers fishing with me on my Action Craft flats skiff the Snook Fin-Addict, out of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters on Siesta Key, had good action catching and releasing snook, trout, Spanish mackerel and bluefish on flies and CAL jigs with shad tails in Sarasota Bay during the past week. The best action was with snook and a variety of species on deep grass flats.

Brittany and Joe Darr, from Orlando, FL and their friend, Josh, from Sarasota, did an instructional fly fishing trip in Sarasota Bay with me on Sunday. We also spin fished while one angler was fly fishing. They made good progress with fly casting and caught and released blues, Spanish mackerel and trout at the Middleground flat and near Buttonwood Harbor on Ultra Hair Clouser flies and CAL jigs with shad tails.

Mike Tremblay, from Richmond, VA, fly fished Sarasota Bay with me on Tuesday. We started before dawn fishing Siesta Key docks where Mike caught and released several snook on my Grassett Snook Minnow fly. He also caught and released several trout on an Ultra Hair Clouser fly at Stephens Point.

I fished with Capt. Andy Cotton, also out of CB’s Saltwater Outfitters, in his boat on Thursday. We found few widely scattered Spanish mackerel and false albacore (little tunny) in the coastal gulf, but they were tough to get on. Andy caught and released a tripletail on a Clouser fly and we had good action catching and releasing trout, blues and jacks on Ultra Hair Clouser flies and CAL jigs with shad tails in Sarasota Bay near Buttonwood Harbor.

Reds are schooling in Sarasota Bay. Look for nervous patches of water or large wakes to find them. Beat the heat by catch and release snook fishing before daylight and then look for reds, trout, blues, Spanish mackerel, tripletail and more in Sarasota Bay.

Tight Lines,

Capt. Rick Grassett
