BRADENTON – During 2013, a preliminary total of 829 manatee deaths were documented. St. Johns River blue crab trap closure starts Jan. 16. This weekend, a high pressure will move across the state Friday, then move to the Atlantic during the weekend as a cold front approaches. There may be periods of small exercise caution conditions during the next couple of days with advisory conditions possible over the weekend.

FWC busy responding to manatee deaths

  • The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has stepped up efforts to respond to manatees in distress and determine the cause of death when possible. During 2013, a preliminary total of 829 manatee deaths were documented.
  • Marine mammal staff from across the state and law enforcement responded to manatees suffering from the effects of red tide in southwest Florida from January through May. Florida red tide, which releases a toxin that affects manatees’ nervous systems, caused the deaths of a record 276 manatees during that period.

 

St. Johns River blue crab trap closure starts Jan. 16

  • Recreational and commercial blue crab traps in all waters of the St. Johns River system must be removed from the water before Jan. 16, the first day of a 10-day trap closure. This closure will give groups authorized by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) the opportunity to identify and retrieve lost and abandoned blue crab traps from the water.
  • The closure includes all waters of the St. Johns River system, its associated lakes and tributaries from west of the St. Johns River’s intersection with the Intracoastal Canal through and including Lake Hellen Blazes in Brevard County.

 

New FWC buoy in Tampa Bay to aid water quality, harmful algal bloom monitoring 

  • A new buoy deployed this month by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) in Old Tampa Bay collects continuous water quality information to help researchers learn more about conditions that trigger harmful algal blooms.

Weekend Fishing Forcast

High pressure will continue across the waters through Friday as a trough of low pressure lifts north over the Gulf. The high moves out over the Atlantic Saturday as a cold front approaches ... then moves across the waters through Saturday night. Winds will increase to near advisory levels with the cold front. High pressure then builds over the deep south for Sunday and Monday.

Thursday

East winds around 10 knots. Bay and inland waters a light chop. A chance of showers. Thursday night will bring east winds around 10 knots. Bay and inland waters a light chop. A chance of showers in the evening, then a slight chance of showers after midnight.

South winds 10 to 15 knots. Bay and inland waters a moderate chop. A chance of showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms may increase winds and seas. Saturday night will bring west winds around 10 knots then becoming northwest after midnight. Bay and inland waters a light chop. A slight chance of showers.
