Captain Favorite's Weekend Fishing Forecast: June 5, 2014

BRADENTON –  The annual Fire Charity Fishing Tournament is this weekend! Four men were rescued off the coast of Anna Maria Sunday. Sea cucumber management takes effect June 11. Weather Underground reports high pressure will bring light winds and waves to the waters through Monday. There is a chance of thunderstorms but conditions will remain well below headline criteria with winds generally 10 knots or less and waves less than one foot.

7th annual Fire Charity Fishing Tournament is this weekend! 

  • The fishing tournament will run from June 6-8 along the Manatee River an will commence withe live music and family entertainment beginning at noon on Sunday at the Bradenton Yacht Club. 
  • Kids get their face painted, participate in arts and crafts, pick up beads, and much more. 
  • An art auction and raffles will be done to add even more money to the charity; all proceeds benefit burn victims.
  • This year’s event was created to bring families together on the water enjoying one of Florida’s favorite sports. 

Sea cucumber management changes take effect June 11

  • A commercial daily trip and vessel limit of 200 sea cucumbers will go into effect June 11 in state and federal waters off Florida.

This change was approved by the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) at its April meeting near Tallahassee.

Men rescued from capsized vessel

  • Four men were rescued May 8 after their 28-foot boat capsized 20 nautical miles west of Anna Maria Island, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.
  • U.S. Coast Guard Station Cortez responded to the call in a 45-foot-reponse boat while a helicopter from the Clearwater station conducted a search from the air, the release said. 
  • The response boat from Cortez eventually located the capsized vessel; the four men were clinging to the overturned hull and were all wearing their life jackets. 
  • There were no reported injuries.

Amberjack, gray triggerfish close June 1 in Gulf state waters

  • The recreational harvest of greater amberjack and gray triggerfish in Gulf of Mexico state waters (shore to 9 nautical miles) closes June 1 and will remain closed through July 31, reopening Aug. 1.
  • In federal Gulf waters, greater amberjack will also be closed June 1 through July 31. Gray triggerfish closed in Gulf federal waters May 1 and will remain closed through Dec. 31.

FWC releases 2013 boating accident statistics, stresses safe boating

  • Sixty-two people lost their lives in Florida last year in boating accidents, and there have already been 11 deaths so far this year, according to the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC), which has released its 2013 Boating Accident Statistical Report

High pressure will bring light winds and waves to the waters through Monday. There is a chance of thunderstorms mostly on the southern waters Friday through Monday. Outside thunderstorms conditions will remain well below headline criteria with winds generally 10 knots or less and waves 1 foot or less.

Southeast winds around 5 knots then becoming west around 10 knots in the afternoon. Bay and inland waters a light chop. Thursday night will bring west winds around 10 knots then becoming southwest around 5 knots after midnight. Bay and inland waters a light chop.
