BRADENTON – The FWC is hosting a summit to address the lionfish problem over the weekend. Recreational harvest of red snapper closed Oct. 22 in state waters of the Gulf of Mexico, with the final day of harvest being Oct. 21. Stone crab season opened Oct. 15! Capt. Rick Grassett says anglers should catch and release snook fishing before daylight and then look for reds, trout, blues, Spanish mackerel and more in Sarasota Bay. Action with false albacore (little tunny), Spanish mackerel and more should begin in the coastal gulf any time now.

FWC Lionfish Summit Oct. 22-24 in Cocoa Beach

In an effort to determine research and management gaps and to bring together leaders in the lionfish issue, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) is hosting a Lionfish Summit Oct. 22-24 at the Hilton Cocoa Beach Oceanfront hotel in Cocoa Beach.
The three-day summit is open to the public and will feature presentations from leaders in lionfish research and management, open discussions on where the gaps in research and management are, and brainstorming on the best methods to fill those gaps. The summit is being sponsored by the Guy Harvey Foundation, the Wildlife Foundation of Florida and Florida Sea Grant.

Stone crab season opened Oct. 15 in state, federal waters

Florida’s recreational and commercial stone crab claw harvest season opens Oct. 15 in state and federal waters. To ensure this valuable resource is available for generations to come, take care when removing crab claws and follow all protective regulations for stone crab harvest.

Gulf red snapper closed recreationally Oct. 22 in state waters

The recreational harvest of red snapper will close Oct. 22 in state waters of the Gulf of Mexico, with the final day of harvest being Oct. 21. The season will close Oct. 15 in Gulf federal waters, with the final day of harvesting being today. State waters are from shore to 9 nautical miles in the Gulf and federal waters are from 9 nautical miles out to 200 nautical miles.
These supplemental recreational red snapper seasons in the Gulf of Mexico are for 2013 only.
