Captain Favorite's Weekend Fishing Forecast: Oct. 3, 2013

Posted

BRADENTON – The federal government shutdown may impact people’s outdoor recreation plans in Florida if they are destined for federal parks and wildlife refuges. The Fall Classic Fishing Tournament to benefit Sarasota Christian School takes place Oct. 4-5. The red fish, snook and trout catch-and-release tourney awards a number of prizes. Authorities are encouraging diving enthusiasts to catch non-native lionfish if they see them roaming around area reefs.

Shutdown doesn’t limit all outdoor recreationists’ activities

  • The federal government shutdown may impact people’s outdoor recreation plans in Florida if they are destined for federal parks and wildlife refuges.
  • The shutdown may close hunting, fishing and wildlife viewing on federal refuges, preserves and federal parks. Boat ramps may also be closed, which impacts access to common areas shared between the U.S. government and Florida. Closures may include visitor centers and gates on all access points.
  • To be sure, consult federal park websites.
  • Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC)-managed lands will remain open.

FWC officers will still be on duty throughout the state, and the FWC’s Wildlife Hotline Alert is always available at 888-404-3922 (FWCC).

  • For information on amenities still available at state wildlife management areas – both the ones where the FWC is the lead and for locations where the FWC cooperatively manages land with other government entities – go to MyFWC.com/Viewing and select “Wildlife Management Areas.”

Lionfish derby offers real life experience

  • Before August 2013, I had talked a lot about lionfish, but other than seeing them in tanks, I had never put my hands on one and never had one for dinner.
  • Lionfish is a hot topic right now. The population of this invasive, nonnative species has boomed exponentially in the past few years, and recent scientific studies indicate that this species may be negatively impacting our marine resources. Today, we are seeing them in places we’ve never seen them before, and there are no signs of them going away anytime soon.
  • The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) has taken notice and is moving forward with actions to help control the population, from changing regulations to hosting a Lionfish Summit later this month (Oct. 22-24) in an effort to identify research and management gaps and brainstorm solutions to the lionfish issue. The summit will be in Cocoa Beach. Visit FWCLionfish.Eventbrite.com to learn more.

As a result the forecast uncertainty is higher than normal during the first several days...and mariners are urged to monitor the latest forecast closely before making plans to boat on the Gulf through the upcoming weekend.
