Captain Favorite's Weekend Fishing Forecast: Sept. 19, 2013

BRADENTON – Recreational bay scallop season Sept. 15, and the FWC is hosting Marinequest in St. Petersburg on October 19. Governor Rick Scott  announced that he will be adding four additional license-free fishing days. A  supplemental recreational red snapper harvest has been eliminated, as well as a closure for several grouper species in Gulf waters, providing anglers with additional fishing opportunities.

Recreational bay scallop season closes Sept. 25

  • The 2013 recreational season for bay scallops will close Wednesday, Sept. 25. The final day of harvesting is Sept. 24.

FWC scallop researchers will conduct underwater surveys after the season closes to reassess the scallop population.

  • While the season is open, scallop harvesters can assist researchers by completing an online survey at http://svy.mk/bayscallops, indicating where they harvest scallops, how many they collect and how long it takes to harvest them.
  • Participants can emailBayScallops@MyFWC.com to ask questions or send additional information.

Fish and Wildlife Research Institute to host 19th annual MarineQuest open house 

  • On Saturday, Oct. 19, the Fish and Wildlife Research Institute (FWRI) will open its doors to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. for MarineQuest 2013. Visitors can explore the world of science at FWRI headquarters, 100 8th Ave. S.E., in downtown St. Petersburg.
  • Held in conjunction with the third annual St. Petersburg Science Festival, the 19th annual MarineQuest open house is a free event for all ages. Visitors learn about fish and wildlife research in Florida through dozens of interactive exhibits staffed by some of the state’s top scientists. People can see live alligators and snakes, help researchers with a simulated manatee rescue and check out live critters found in Tampa Bay at touch tanks. Special activities for children include wildlife origami and gyotaku, the Japanese art of fish printing.
  • FWRI is the research division of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC). FWRI’s work is used by all levels of government, universities, private organizations and the public.

Fishing Forecast 

High pressure to the north of the region will provide another favorable setup for an easterly surge of wind tonight into early Thursday. Winds tonight are forecast to reach cautionary levels over much of the coastal waters. Winds will diminish below headline criteria during the daylight hours of Thursday but likely return to cautionary levels during Thursday evening from Englewood northward.
