JUPITER – The Marauders (37-26) dropped a back-and-forth thriller 12-11 to the Palm Beach Cardinals (38-25) in 10 innings on Sunday afternoon at Roger Dean Stadium. The loss drops the Marauders a game behind the Cardinals in the South Division second half standings and two games back in the overall standings behind the Cardinals.
Bradenton needed a big comeback in the ninth inning to avoid falling in regulation. Trailing 10-6 and facing 2013 Florida State League All-Star Ronnie Shaban, Jose Osuna worked a one out walk to start the rally. Jordan Steranka shot a single the other way into left field, Eric Wood walked, and Justin Howard singled to bring Osuna home to score. Shaban bounced back to strike out Max Moroff on a 3-2 pitch and got ahead 0-2 on Jacob Stallings. Stallings hammered the 0-2 pitch to left for his third home run of the season, a go-ahead grand slam to put the Marauders in front 11-10.
Josh Smith (L, 3-2) blew his first save of the season in the bottom of the ninth. A walk and a single put two aboard with nobody out. After a strikeout for the first out of the inning, Mason Katz hit a hard grounder in the hole on the left side. Adam Frazier dove to field the ball, but his attempt to force out the lead runner at third base from his knees rolled into the dugout, sending the tying run in to score. Smith got another strikeout and a fly out to strand the winning run at third base.
In the bottom of the 10th, Smith surrendered a one out double to Jimmy Bosco. Bosco finished the game 4-for-6 with two doubles and finished a home run shy of the cycle. Dante Rosenberg, batting for the first time after entering defensively in the top of the 10th, lined a single to right field to win the game for Palm Beach.
The Marauders led early, plating the game’s first three runs on one wild play. Cardinals starter Corey Baker allowed consecutive two-out singles to Adam Frazier and Walker Gourley in the top of the third. Jose Osuna lined a two-run triple to right field corner, and Katz fired the relay throw to third into the stands to score Osuna.
Palm Beach got on the board for the first time in the bottom of the fourth. David Washington tagged Shane Carle for a leadoff double. Washington scored one out later on Bosco’s triple. Gerwuins Velazco doubled to left field to bring home Bosco and trim the lead to 3-2 for Bradenton. Carle finished the inning with the lead intact, but did not return for the fifth inning. The Cardinals scored three more times in the fifth inning off Joan Montero to take the lead 5-3.
The Marauders got a run-scoring single from Max Moroff off Iden Nazario in the sixth inning to get the Marauders within 5-4. Osuna plated Kevin Herget in the seventh to knot the score 5-5.
Tyler Sample surrendered five runs to the Cardinals in the seventh, putting the home team up 10-5. Jhondaniel Medina recorded the final two outs of the seventh and tossed a scoreless eighth before giving way to Smith. Stallings singled home a run in the top of the eighth to get the Marauders to within 10-6.
The Marauders open a three-game series against the Fort Myers Miracle on Monday at McKechnie Field. The game starts at 6:30 p.m. with gates opening at 5:30 p.m. Jason Creasy will start for the Marauders.
